ASDs are abnormal connections between the two upper chambers of the heart (atria) that lead to stunted growth and frequent illnesses. Over time, large ASDs can lead to pulmonary hypertension. Traditionally, these defects were closed by surgical correction via patch repair of the ASD. Now, with ASD closure devices, they can be closed through a short procedure in the cardiac catheterization lab.

Depending on the position of the defect, many children with ASD can have it corrected with a cardiac catheterization. In this procedure, a thin, flexible tube called a catheter is inserted into a blood vessel in the leg that leads to the heart. A cardiologist guides the tube into the heart to make measurements of blood flow, pressure, and oxygen levels in the heart chambers. A special implant can be positioned into the hole in the septum. The device is designed to flatten against the septum on both sides to close and permanently seal the ASD. In the beginning, the natural pressure in the heart holds the device in place. Over time, the normal tissue of the heart grows over the device and covers it entirely. This non-surgical technique for closing an ASD eliminates the scar on the chest needed for the surgical approach, and has a shorter recovery time, usually just an overnight stay in the hospital.

Technical principles

The occluder is made of self-expandable nitinol wire mesh, which is able to comply with the shape of defect parts, so it can be fixed well and do not affect tissues around. Meanwhile, with the flow blocking material sewing in the wire mesh, thrombus can be formed quickly that the endothelial cells could cover on the surface of the occluder to close the shunt completely.

Basic product structure

1) Self-expandable double-disc occluder, umbrella-shape, the waist diameter in accordances with the ASD size, conventient to operate.

2) Consisted of metal wire mesh made of nickel-titanium alloy, flow blocking material, stitches, front termination point and back termination point.

3) No adhesion between each layer of flow blocking material.

Characteristics:

1) The metal mesh of the closure is knitted by imported nitinol wire(different size with different thickness), which has good memorability and biocompatibility.

Applied scope

1) Age of the patients should be older than or equal to 3 years.

2) Patients are diagnosed as ASD by clinical diagnosis, electrocardiogram, chest film or transthoracic echocardiography, and are considered suitable to deploy closure treatment, with no contraindications.

3) ASD diameter should be greater than or equal to 5 mm, with right ventricular volume overload increases; secundum left-to-right shunt ASD diameter should be less than or equal to 36 mm.

4) The distance from the defect edge extends to coronary sinus, to upper & inferior vena cava or to pulmonary vein should be greater than or equal to 5 mm, but to atrioventricular valve should be greater than 7 mm.

5) Diameter of atrial septum larger than diameter of the closure's left septum part.

6) Not associate with other cardiamorphia must be surgical operated.
